The Core will track everything you do. You know, to "inspire ideas and make recommendations."

At CES, Sony outed a new life-tracking nugget it's calling the Core—a name that sounds a bit too much like a science fiction doomsday device for our comfort. Sony hopes it will earn the company a unique slice of the growing wearable tech market.

Sony presented the dongle-like Core at its big press conference Monday evening. The device pairs with Sony's own Lifelog Android app (via Bluetooth) and tracks physical, social, and entertainment-related activities—all of which are displayed in a pretty, modern graphical interface. It charges via micro USB, and the battery can last up to five days on a charge. It's priced at €99 in Europe, with no U.S. pricing yet available.

"It's not just about motion but emotion," said Sony Executive Vice President Kunimasa Suzuki of what he declared might be Sony's tiniest gadget ever.

"It's not just about motion but emotion," said Sony Executive Vice President Kunimasa Suzuki of what he declared might be Sony's tiniest gadget ever.

We're not sure what exactly he means by "emotion," and Suzuki himself even acknowledged that his presentation was a bit vague. Still, he asked onlookers to stay tuned for more announcements about Core and Lifelog at next month's Mobile World Congress.

What we saw at CES was ultimately a lot of talk—potentially exciting talk, but talk all the same. But the concept of logging, bookmarking, and visualizing daily life is one that many companies—from all corners of the consumer tech, healthcare, and marketing worlds—are actively pursuing. The first to truly capitalize on it could be tapping into a truly new market.

Sony, Suzuki said, hopes to "inspire ideas and recommendations," and promised to pursue the new venture with a "spirit of open partnership." We'll certainly be following along to see what develops.
